I am proud to support a Government that is tackling the something-for-nothing benefits culture we inherited from Labour. Capping benefits so that out-of-work households cannot claim more in benefits than an average working family earns through hard graft is a basic matter of fairness.
Conservatives believe though that more can and must be done to tackle our bloated Welfare State. For most in work, when they have a child their income changes very little. But for those on benefits, their income changes substantially! The system has been encouraging working-age people to have children and not work, when it should enable working-age people to work and have children.
At a time when many people are struggling, we Conservatives believe it’s right to ask whether those on welfare are faced with the same kinds of decisions that working people face when they have a child.
